Six climate activists take on 32 European
nations in a landmark court case
STRASBOURG, Sept 27: Six young people argued that governments across Europe aren't doing enough to protect people from climate change at the European Court of Human Rights on Wednesday in the latest and largest instance of activists taking governments to court to force climate action. Legal teams for the 32 nations - which includes the 27 EU member countries, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Russia and Turkey - questioned the admissibility of the case as well as the claim that the plaintiffs are victims of climate change harm. — AP
Amazon rainforest faces severe drought
RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 27: The Amazon rainforest in Brazil is facing a severe drought that may affect around 500,000 people by the end of the year, authorities said Tuesday. Many are already struggling to access essential supplies such as food and water, because the principal means of transportation in the region is waterways, and river levels are historically low. Droughts also impact fishing, a means of subsistence for many riverside communities. — AP
Quake jolts Italy's volcanic Campi Flegrei
ROME, Sept 27: A 4.2-magnitude earthquake shook Italy's Campi Flegrei region west of Naples in the early hours Wednesday, in the biggest tremor in the area for 40 years, according to experts. The quake scared residents but caused no injuries or damage, according to the civil protection agency. — AFP
