Twins drown in Sitakunda pond
CHATTOGRAM, Nov 11: Two sisters drowned in a pond while playing near their house in the Barowalia area of Chattogram's Sitakunda upazila on Friday. The deceased were identified as Samia Sultana Sneha and Safia Sultana Synthia, 4, daughters of Mohammad Ershad of Kazlipara village of the upazila. The tragic incident happened on Friday evening, Sonaichhari Union Parishad Chairman Moni Ahmed, confirmed. Local neighbor Ramzan Ali said that the twin sisters left the house to play in the afternoon. When they could not be found anywhere, locals and family members started searching in the pond. At one point, they recovered the duo. Nargis Akhter, mother of the victims said, around 5:30, she saw the floating sandals of her two daughters on the water of the pond. Hearing her scream, neighbours rescued the two sisters and took them to the local Bhatiari BSBA hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival, the ill-fated mother said. Due to the tragic incident, a pall of gloom has descended on the village. — UNB
Two held with 10 kg hemp in C'nawabganj
CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Nov 11: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two alleged drug peddlers with 10 kg of hemp from Chapainawabganj town early Saturday. The arrestees were Md. Bisharat, 70 of Kaliganj Rahmat Mollartola and Md. Mojibur Rahman, 51, of Kaliganj Malopara both under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district. RAB said, acting on detective information, an operation team of RAB-5 from Chapainawabganj camp conducted a raid at Biswaroad area in Chapainawabganj town at around 1 am and arrested the duo with the hemp. Later the elite force handed them over to the police of Chapainawabganj sadar thana with a case, the sources added. — BSS
Farmers' training held in Bholahat
CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Nov 11: Speakers at a daylong farmers training today stressed on applying fertilisers by testing soil to get more crops. Chapainawabganj regional office of Soil Resource Development Institute arranged the training programme at Bholahat upazila parishad auditorium in association with Bholahat upazila office of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). It was held with the chief scientific officer of the Chapainawabganj regional office of the Soil Resource Development Institute Dr. Md. Nurul Islam in the chair while director of the field service wing of the Institute Dr. Begum Samia Sultana attended it as the chief guest. A total of 50 farmers were imparted training on collection method of sample of soil, proper use of fertiliser, conservation of soil health and identification of adulterated fertiliser. — BSS
