BD logs 15 Covid cases
Bangladesh reported 15 more Covid-19 cases in the 24 hours until Friday morning. With the new numbers, the country's total caseload rose to 2,038,207, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). However, the official death toll from the disease remained unchanged at 29,446 as no new fatalities were reported. The daily case test positivity increased to 0.75 per cent from Thursday's 0.44 per cent as 1,131 samples were tested. The recovery rate increased to 98.40 per cent. However, the death rate remained unchanged at 1.44 per cent. — UNB

Zero dengue cases reported
No fresh case or death due to dengue was reported in Bangladesh in the 24 hours until Friday morning. Thirty-seven dengue patients, including 27 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). So far, the DGHS has recorded 962 dengue cases, 915 recoveries, and then deaths this year. The country logged 281 dengue deaths in 2022 - the highest on record after 179 deaths recorded in 2019. Also, it recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year. — UNB

29 injured as bus overturns in Joypurhat
JOYPURHAT, Apr 28: At least 29 people, including women and children, were injured as a passenger bus overturned in Sadar upazila of Joypurhat district on Friday, police said. Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station, said the accident occurred in the early morning when the Dhaka-bound bus overturned on Joypurhat-Panchbibi road in Gatan Shahar area after losing control over the steering, leaving some 29 passengers injured. On information, members of fire and civil service defence rushed to the spot and sent them to Joypurhat Adhunik Zilla Hospital where they are undergoing treatment, he said, adding that fortunately no one died in the accident. — UNB

BGB arrest man with six
gold bars in Naogaon
NAOGAON, Apr 28: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a man allegedly carrying six gold bars worth over Tk 5.0 million in Dhamoirhat upazila of Nagaon district along the India border. The arrestee is identified as Kibria, 38, son of Md Alauddin of Chakbadal village under the upazila. BGB-14 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Hamid Uddin at a press conference at the battalion's headquarters in Naogaon said tipped-off a special team of the border force conducted a drive at Chakilam village under the upazila along the India border on Thursday night. — UNB

Schoolboy drowns in Bhairab river
JESSORE, Apr 28: A 12-year-boy drowned in the Bhairab river while taking a bath at Mahakal Kheyaghat of Abhaynagar Upazila under Jessore district. The deceased was identified as Shuvo Datta, 12, son of Subrata Datta and resident of Mahakal Dattapara of Abhaynagar Upazila. He was a student in class VI at Pilot High School. Mezbaul Fakir, sub-station officer of Nowapara Fire Service, said that Shuvo drowned in the Bhairab River while bathing along with some friends. — UNB
