Youth crushed under train in city
An unnamed youth has been killed under the wheels of a moving train in Karwan Bazar Rail Crossing in the city.. "The boy (17) was trying to cross the rail line in a hurry as the Mymensingh bound Haor Express was going through the track around 10.30 pm on Thursday. He was hit by the train and fell under that. He died on the spot," duty officer ASI Navera Nasrin of Kamalapur Railway thana said. Police said the body of the boy, who was wearing a navy-blue full pant and sky blue full shirt at the time of the accident, was badly severed and barely recognizable. His body was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy. An unnatural death case has been filed in this connection. — BSS
BD reports 4 more dengue cases
Four more people were hospitalised with dengue in last 24 hours until Friday morning. All the four new patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Seventy-six dengue patients, including 58 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country. So far, the DGHS has recorded 1,066 dengue cases, 979 recoveries, and eleven deaths this year. The country logged 281 dengue deaths in 2022 - the highest on record after 179 deaths recorded in 2019. Also, it recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year. — UNB
Two killed in Gopalganj road accidents
Two people, including a freedom fighter, were killed in two separate road accidents in Ghonapara of Kashiani upazila and Rishatla of Muksudpur upazila on Dhaka-Khulna highway on Thursday. The dead are freedom fighter Abul Hossain (75), son of Ismail Molla, a resident of Ratail village of Kashiani upazila of the district and Azizul Karigar (52), son of Nala Karigar of Char Bagrail village of Saltha upazila of Faridpur district. Sub-inspector (SI) of Bhatiapara Highway thana of Kashiani upazila Sirajul Islam said the freedom fighter Abul Hossain arrived at Ghonapara bus stand of Kashiani upazila on the Dhaka-Khulna highway around 9:30 pm to go to Khulna. He signaled a Khulna-bound BMS transport bus to stop. Despite slowing down at that place, the bus hit the freedom fighter. Later, he was rescued and taken to Kashiani 100-bed hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Nargis Akhter, daughter of the freedom fighter, filed a case with the highway thana. The killer bus has been impounded and the bus driver Shah Alam has been arrested. In another accident, sub-inspector (SI) of Bhanga Highway thana Al-Mamud said Nasimon's passenger Azizul Karigar was killed in a collision between Nasimon and a bus at Rishatla in Muksudpur upazila on the Dhaka-Khulna highway on Thursday. — BSS
Two detained with 20 gold bars in Jhenaidah
Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have detained two persons with 20 gold bars from the Maheshpur border region in Jhenaidah. The detainees are Asanur, (48) and Nabishaddi Mondal (58), of Palianpur village. Based on information that a consignment of gold could be smuggled from Bangladesh to India through the Palianpur border in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah, the BGB battalion led by its commander Lt Col Masud Parvez Rana conducted a raid on Thurs night and recovered the gold and detained the two, said a BGB press release on Friday. Around 10:15 pm, the BGB patrol team saw two men going towards the zero line of the border through the field and challenged them. Later, they were searched and 20 gold bars weighing 2.331 kg were recovered from them. A case has been filed at Maheshpur thana against the detainees for illegally transporting gold to India. The gold bars were handed over to the Jhenaidah Treasury Office. — UNB
Man held over killing wife, daughter in Laxmipur
A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and daughter over family dispute in Ramganj of Laxmipur, said Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The arrestee Jamal Uddin and his wife Raushan Ara Begum had been in a family dispute since the beginning of their marriage, said 11 Lt Commander Mahmudul Hasan of RAB 11 Noakhali, CPC, Camp at a press conference on Friday afternoon. Jamal lived in a rented house in Dhaka's Rayedbagh area with his family. On April 15, he allegedly strangled Raushan to death over a dispute. At one point, he killed his one-year-old daughter by putting a pillow on her when she was sleeping, said RAB. After the murders, Jamal left Dhaka for Noakhali by loading the bodies in a wardrobe on a pickup. At one point, he aborted going to Noakhali and dumped the bodies in a canal in Ramganj. On April 19, police found the decomposed bodies of a one-year-old girl under the Hanubaish bridge of the canal along the Ramganj-Sonaimuri road and a woman under the bridge in front of the nearby Alipur SP house. On that night, police filed a murder case with Ramganj thana against an unidentified accused. Jamal has confessed to the killings over a family dispute. — UNB
