Three Myanmar brigadier generals to
die for surrendering town
YANGON, Feb 19: Myanmar's junta has sentenced to death three brigadier generals who surrendered with hundreds of troops and handed over a strategic town on the Chinese border to ethnic minority fighters last month, military sources told AFP on Monday. "Three brigadier generals including the commander of Laukkai town were given the death sentence," a military source told AFP on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorised to talk to the media. — AFP
Two cops, medic killed in US shooting
MINNESOTA, Feb 19: Minnesota police say two officers and a paramedic have been killed in a shooting at a family home. The gunman, who was barricaded inside his Burnsville home with seven children, opened fire as officers tried to negotiate with him. The dead officers were named as Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27, and the paramedic was Adam Finseth, 40. — BBC
25 perish in Afghanistan landslide
KABUL, Feb 19: A landslide caused by heavy snowfall has killed 25 people and injured eight others in the eastern Afghan province of Nuristan, a disaster management ministry spokesman said on Monday. Earth, snow and rubble swept through the village of Nakre in the Tatin valley of Nuristan overnight on Sunday. — AFP
64 massacred in PNG tribal violence
MELBOURNE, Feb 19: At least 53 men were massacred in a major escalation of tribal violence in Papua New Guinea, Australian media reported Monday. A tribe, their allies and mercenaries were on their way to attack a neighboring tribe when they were ambushed Sunday in Enga province in the South Pacific nation's remote highlands, Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Acting Superintendent George Kakas told Australian Broadcasting Corp. — AP
