Canada arrests fourth Indian national
In 2023 killing of Sikh activist
MONTREAL, May 12: A fourth Indian national was charged by Canadian authorities Saturday in the 2023 killing of a separatist Sikh leader in Vancouver. Amandeep Singh, 22, was already being held for unrelated gun charges before being charged with "first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder" in the slaying of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Three other Indian nationals were arrested this month. The killing sparked a diplomatic row between Ottawa and New Delhi when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau linked Indian intelligence to the killing. — AFP
Indonesia floods, landslides kill 34
JAKARTA, May 12: Heavy rain brought floods and landslides to Indonesia's province of West Sumatra, killing at least 34, with four still missing, authorities said on Sunday. "There are 34 people killed, and we are still searching for four others who are missing," Abdul Malik, the chief of the provincial rescue team, told Reuters. The national disaster management agency BNPB said in a statement that flooding since Saturday night had brought mud to the Tanah Datar regency, affecting five sub-districts. — Reuters
Zelensky fires head of his bodyguards
KYIV, May 12: Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has sacked the head of his personal protection unit after two of its top officials were detained over an alleged assassination plot. Serhiy Rud has led the president's security detail since 2019. Greek PM to visit Turkey to boost ties
ISTANBUL, May 12: Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be received Monday in Ankara by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the latest sign of warming relations between the NATO neighbours. After decades of tensions, occasionally broken by brief periods of reconciliation, the day-long visit follows a trip by Erdogan to Greece in December and marks a new phase in their relations, diplomats said. — AFP
