Heavy crowds but smooth
Eid travel at Paturia Ghat
MANIKGANJ, June 15: A large number of holidaymakers have been thronging the Paturia-Daulatdia ferry ghats since Saturday morning to cross the river. Despite the heavy traffic, cattle-laden vehicles are crossing smoothly due to strict monitoring by law enforcement agencies. The number of ferries has been increased for Eid-ul-Azha. Authorities have taken steps to ensure a hassle-free journey for the people of 21 southeastern regions. Deputy General Manager of BIWTC, Khaled Newaz, reported that 20 ferries are operating on the route. Additional police are ensuring smooth travel and prioritizing cattle-laden vehicles to reach their markets, said Superintendent of Manikganj Police Md Golam Azad. — UNB

Body of missing HSC
candidate found in pond
PANCHAGARH, June 15: Police recovered the body of a 19-year-old girl from a pond near her house one day after she went missing in Panchagarh's Sadar upazila on Saturday. The deceased, Shahida Begum was an HSC candidate and resident of Bamanpara village. Shahida went outside on Friday at around 09:00 am. Her father, Harun, filed a missing diary in the evening, as they could not locate her after searching for a while. Locals spotted a dead body in the pond on Saturday morning and informed the police. Panchagarh Sadar Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Pradeep Kumar Roy, said legal action will be taken based on the family's complaint after the autopsy. — UNB

Two cleaners die while
working in septic tank
SHARIATPUR, June 15: Two cleaners died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank in Damudya upazila of Shariatpur district early Friday. The deceased were Malek Sheikh, 45, and Liton Bepari, 35, both from Sonatala in Bogura upazila. The incident occurred at the house of Kabir Sardar in North Damudya village. According to Emarat Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Damudya Police Station, the men were hired for Tk 10,000 to clean the tank. Liton fell into the tank, and Malek followed to rescue him, but both became unconscious. Fire service personnel rescued them, but they were declared dead at the local hospital. — UNB
