ICC faces challenging search
for new prosecutor
THE HAGUE, July 27: The International Criminal Court (ICC) faces a challenging search for a new prosecutor after Karim Khan was dismissed, against the backdrop of a US diplomatic campaign to undermine the court and a rise in states withdrawing from the institution. On Monday Chad became the fifth country to start the formal withdrawal process in recent months, following Venezuela, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. — Reuters
30 killed in village attack in
Nigeria's Kaduna state
ABUJA, July 27: At least 30 people were killed when armed men attacked a village in Nigeria's northwestern Kaduna state early on Monday, two residents said. Dogon Rana, secretary to the village head, said gunmen stormed the community shooting randomly and burning houses. Eight children were among the dead, while four other people sustained injuries. — Reuters
Nolan's 'Odyssey' shows staying
power at N America box office
LOS ANGELES, July 27: Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster, "The Odyssey," retained the top spot at the North American box office in its second week, taking in an additional $87 million, industry estimates showed Sunday. The film from Universal had an "outstanding hold" for its second weekend, industry analyst David A. Gross said, after it dropped only about 30 per cent from its $124 million debut. — AFP
