Lightning strike kills two
farmers in Kushtia
KUSHTIA, July 01: Two farmers died and another sustained injuries after being struck by lightning at Krisnapur village in Sadar upazila of Kushtia on Saturday. The deceased--Jahur Ali, 50, son of Karim Sawdargar and Salim Uddin, 37, son of Mahir Uddin, were from the Krisnapur village and the injured Rezaul, 37, is also from the same village. Quoting locals, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sadhan Kumar Biswas said the farmers took shelter under the shade of a tin-shed tea-stall at the village when the lightning amid a heavy downfall started at noon. Suddenly, the lightning struck on the tin-shed of the stall leaving the duo dead on the spot and another critically injured, he said. The injured was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where he is now out of danger, said the hospital's residential medical officer Taposh Kumar Sarkar. — UNB
Teen lynched in Cox's Bazar
A mentally-challenged teenager was lynched allegedly by members of a teen gang as he refused to deliver drugs for them in Cox's Bazar Sadar upazila's Asrayan Prakalpa area. Hefaz Uddin, son of Saleh Ahmed, was critically injured when locals rescued him. He was declared dead when he was taken to sadar hospital. His father said the gang members tortured his son several times before this incident. They gave complaints to the local councilor but the gang didn't stop, he said. They also faced threats multiple times, he said. Local ward councilor Akter Kamal said the gang members tortured the boy before. They were fined in arbitration regarding this, he said. Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Cox's Bazar Model police station, said the body was sent to morgue for autopsy. Legal steps will be taken, he said. — UNB
Site manager dies falling off
under-construction building
A man died after falling off the third floor of an under-construction building at Gendaria in the capital on Friday. The deceased, identified as Md Mahmud, 40, was the site manager of the under-construction building. According to family sources, Mahmud went to the building for a routine check but he fell off accidentally at around 05:30 pm. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead at around 07:00 pm. SI Md Masud Mia of the DMCH police outpost said the body was sent to the morgue for an autopsy. — UNB
Man 'stabs elder brother to death' in Ctg
CHATTOGRAM, July 01: A 55-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his younger brother at Chandnaish upazila in Chattogram on Friday. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Musa, son of Abdul Wares. Quoting witnesses, Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chandnaish Police Station, said an altercation happened between Musa and his younger brother Abdul Bayez over money at their house in Phultala Sagir Para in the afternoon. At one stage, Abdul Bayez stabbed Musa indiscriminately, leaving him injured. Musa was taken to Dohazari Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Police recovered the body. Police are also trying to arrest Bayez, said the OC. — UNB
