11 dead, 27 missing
in Beijing flood
BEIJING, Aug 01: Chinese state media report 11 people have died and 27 are missing amid flooding in the mountains surrounding the capital Beijing. Days of heavy rains have prompted authorities to close train stations and evacuate people in vulnerable communities to school gyms, state broadcaster CCTV reported Tuesday. Homes have been flooded, roads torn apart and cars piled into stacks. — AP

peril mounts
WASHINGTON, Aug 01: Former President Donald Trump 's mounting legal woes are growing more expensive, leading his political operation to shell out tens of millions of dollars for attorneys' fees, request a large refund from a supportive super PAC and launch a new legal defense fund. Since the beginning of this year, Save America, Trump's political action committee, has spent more than $40 million on legal fees for costs related to defending the former president, his aides and other allies, according to a person familiar with the spending. — AP
Islamic State claims
responsibility for Pak rally attack
KHAR, Aug 01: The Islamic State group on Monday claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Pakistan that killed at least 54 people including five children at a pro-Taliban cleric's rally in one of the worst attacks in the country in recent years. IS, known as the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, made the claim in a statement posted on its Amaq website. The statement said the attack was part of the group's continuing war against forms of democracy it deems to be against Islam. — AP
17 killed in India crane collapse
MUMBAI, Aug 01: At least 17 workers were crushed to death in western India on Tuesday when a crane collapsed above an under-construction expressway outside the financial capital Mumbai, disaster response officials said. The crane toppled onto large concrete slabs during the night, with debris then smashing down as labourers worked on the Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra state, India's National Disaster Response Force (NRDF) said. The NRDF said 17 bodies had been recovered, and three injured people had been taken to hospital. — AFP
