Four killed as Indian train derails
NEW DELHI, Oct 12: At least four people have been killed and an unknown number injured after an express train derailed in India's Bihar state, local media reported Thursday. The train from Anand Vihar Terminal railway station in Delhi came off the rails late Wednesday as it raced to the Kamakhya Junction in Assam, the Times of India newspaper reported. "Four casualties have been confirmed and rescue operation is underway. Twenty-one coaches have derailed," Tarun Prakash, general manager of the East Central Railway, was quoted by the Times as saying.—AFP
Destroyed drone's debris kills two
MOSCOW, Oct 12: Debris from a drone destroyed over the Russian region of Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, fell on homes and killed two people and injured at least two others, the regional governor said on Thursday. "The air defence system in Belgorod district shot down an aircraft-type UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) approaching the city," Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on the Telegram messaging app. "As a result of falling debris, a private residential building caught fire," he said, adding later that the falling debris had completely destroyed one residential building, and partially damaged two others. California player wins $1.76b lottery
CALIFORNIA, Oct 12: A single ticket sold in California has won $1.76 billion (£1.4 billion) on the Powerball - the second-largest lottery jackpot in history. The identity of the ticket holder has not been disclosed. The winner has the choice of having the money paid out over 30 years, or receiving an estimated $774.1 million lump-sum payment. The biggest ever win was $2.04 billion in November 2022. That ticket was also bought in California. The odds of winning the jackpot are one in 292.2 million. In comparison, the odds of being struck by lightning over the next year is 1 in 1.22 million, according to the US National Weather Service. — BBC
Two dead in migrant smuggling accident
BUDAPEST, Oct 12: Two people died and six others were injured when a car thought to be smuggling people through Hungary overturned on Thursday, Hungarian police said. Since July, there has been a rise compared to previous months in the number of undocumented migrants and asylum seekers crossing from Serbia into Hungary, which is a member of the European Union. The car driver refused to stop for a routine inspection and instead sped off, losing control at a nearby bend in the road, according to the police. — AFP
