Cargo ship sinks near
Mongla Port
A cargo ship carrying 800 tonnes of coal has sunk in the Pasur River near Mongla Port in Bagerhat amid rough weather caused by Cyclone Midhili. MV Prince of Ghashiakhali suffered a hull breach in the Charkana area, away from the main channel of the port on Friday morning, said Mainul Islam, a vice-president of Bangladesh Lighterage Workers Union's Mongla unit. The port authorities suspended cargo loading and unloading because of the storm. The ship's owner Md Bashir Hossain said it had started for Jashore's Noapara after taking the cargo from a foreign ship at the port. The 12 crew members onboard the vessel were able to swim ashore. The shipmaster tried to save the ship by sailing it onto a shoal after the hull breach, but failed, Bashir said. — bdnews24.com

Child drowns in Magura
MAGURA, Nov 17: A child drowned in a pond in Bararia village of Balidia union of Magura's Mohammadpur upazila. The deceased was identified as Meherima (2), daughter of Md. Abdullah Sardar of Bararia West Para. She drowned in a ditch at his aunt's house in Shyamnagar village of the upazila on Thursday. Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Raihanul Islam confirmed the news. Mehrima along with her maternal grandmother went to visit her uncle Mahdi Hasan's house in Shyamnagar village on Thursday. Later in the afternoon, Mehrima drowned in a pond near the house without anyone noticing. A case has been registered in this regard at Mohammadpur police station. — UNB

Navy ships to remain open for

all on Armed Forces Day
Bangladesh Navy will keep its ships in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal and Chandpur open for all to visit on the occasion of the Armed Forces Day on November 21. Bangladesh Naval vessels will remain open at the selected river ports from 02:00 pm until the sun sets on November 21 (Tuesday). It said the places where the ships will be kept are - Sadarghat in Dhaka, Naval Berth/BN RRB in Chattogram, Khulna Naval Berth/Rocket Ghat and Digraj Naval Berth/ Mongla Port in Bagerhat, BIWTA Ghat in Barishal and BIWTA Ghat in Chandpur. — BSS

Ctg-Sylhet train link snapped
as tree falls on track
BRAHMANBARIA, Nov 17: Chattogram and Sylhet-bound rail communications snapped with Dhaka, after a tree fell on the railway track in Brahmanbaria due to stormy weather on Friday. The incident happened in Kalsima area on the Dhaka-Chattogram rail track, as a result, the Chattogram-bound train Suborno Express is currently stuck in Brahmanbaria. Acting station master of the Brahmanbaria Rail Station Jashim Uddin said, a tree fell on the rail line in Sadar upazila's Kalisima area at around 6:45 pm. Due to this, the Subarna Express train had to stop at Talshahar Rail Station of Ashuganj at 07:00 pm. The train will leave the station, once the tree is removed from the rail track, he added. — UNB
