Crane operator electrocuted in Bogura
BOGURA, Aug 20: A crane operator was electrocuted and his helper sustained injuries while installing an electric pole in the Khamarbari area of Bogura's Adamdighi upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as Nazim Uddin, 36, son of Taju Mia from Nemshikali village of Kutubdia upazila under Cox's Bazar district. According to locals, a group of workers hired by contractor company Nesco Limited had been installing electric poles in various villages of the upazila for a long time. "The accident happened when the crane that Nazim and helper Harunur Rashid were operating came in contact with a live wire during the installation of a pole," said Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Adamdighi police station. Both of them were rushed to Adamdighi Upazila Health Complex where Nazim died of his injuries a little later, he added. "Harun is currently undergoing treatment at the health complex." — UNB
4-year-old boy burnt to death in Sherpur
SHERPUR, Aug 20: A four-year-old boy was charred to death in a fire that engulfed his family house in Sherpur on Friday night, fire officials said. The deceased was identified as Ismail Hossain, son of Amir Hossain of Babarchar Baldiapara village in Sribordi upazila. The fire broke out at the cowshed of a person, named Ishak Ali, from charcoal bran kept there to drive away mosquitoes around 8 pm and spread quickly to two adjacent dwelling houses, said Ariful Islam, station officer of Sribordi Upazila Fire Service and Civil Defense. All the occupants of the two houses, except the child, managed to get out, he said. On information, a fire tender was rushed to the spot. After the flames were doused, firemen recovered the charred body of the boy from one of the houses. — UNB
Weeklong tree fair begins in Narail
NARAIL, Aug 20: A weeklong tree fair began on the Zila Shilpakala Academy premises in the district town Saturday. The theme of this year is 'Brikhaprane Prokriti-Protibesh, Agami Projanmer Teksai Bangladesh'. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Habibur Rahman formally inaugurated the fair as the chief guest, held on the Zila Shilpakala Academy premises, jointly organized by District Administration and Forest Department. On the occasion of the day, a colorful rally was brought out from in front of Deputy Commissioner office and ended on the Zila Shilpakala Academy premises in the district. A total of 15 stalls with seedlings of various species of fruit, forest and medicinal plants have been set up on the fair premises. The tree fair will continue till August 26. — BSS
