The next elected government should continue with the works of the Bangladesh Better Business Forum (BBBF) for establishing a business-friendly environment in the country, said a chamber leader Wednesday.
"The next government should not scrap the BBBF though it has been formed by the present caretaker government," said president of the International Chamber of Commerce-Bangladesh (ICC-B) Mahbubur Rahman, also the co-chairperson of a working group of the forum.
"From the private sector, we seek continuation of the forum. It is the unique public-private partnership (PPP) platform in the country," he said replying to a question while briefing journalists at the office of the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies & Firms (RJSCF) in the city.
A BBBF delegation, led by Mr. Rahman, visited the registrar office in the city to assess whether the forum's recommendations for simplifying businesses were being implementing properly.
Executive chairman of the Board of Investment (BoI) and also member secretary of BBBF Kamaluddin Ahmed and some businessmen also attended the meeting.
The working group has already made several recommendations on simplification and automation of registration process and other works at the RJSCF.
The caretaker government in 2007 formed the BBBF. The forum has five working groups to make recommendations in a bid to improve the business environment in the country.
Mr Rahman demanded strengthening of the RJSCF through full automation, recruiting more manpower and shifting the office premises to a better site.
The business leader said the office has piles of pending files due to shortage of manpower.
"If the registrar office is equipped well businesses will expand and more jobs will be created in the country," he added.
Registrar SM Mobarok Hossain said his organisation has only 39 staffs across the country. Of them only eight are involved in registration process in Dhaka office.
"Every staff has 15,000 files on an average pending. If they work on five files a day it will take 10 years to complete the job," he said.
The registrar said he has been seeking government assistance without any success for making the office well-equipped.
"With such limitation, we have taken steps to complete registration of a new company/firms/society within seven working days from their application date," Mr. Hossain said.
The office has, so far, given registration to some 0.125 million companies, firms and societies, he said.
