Next polls will be held in a free, fair, credible manner within timeframe, President tells Vietnam envoy

President Dr Iajuddin Ahmed said the next general elections would be held in a free, fair and credible manner within the timeframe set by the Election Commission (EC).
"The Election Commission has already announced election roadmap and is working to this effect," the President said while talking to the newly appointed ambassador of Vietnam in Bangladesh, Nguen Van, when he presented his credentials to the President at Bangabhaban in the city Monday, reports UNB.
The President also invited international observers to observe the upcoming general elections.
Welcoming the new envoy, President Iajuddin Ahmed congratulated him on his new assignment as the ambassador of Vietnam in Bangladesh.
The President said Bangladesh attached great importance to its bilateral relations with Vietnam.
He underlined the need for enhancing bilateral trade and commerce for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
He told the envoy that the government of Vietnam might import high-class pharmaceuticals, melamine, garments and textiles, jute and leather products from Bangladesh at competitive prices.
The President stated that Bangladesh and Vietnam shared similar views on many major regional and international issues and worked closely in various fora, including the United Nations (UN).
He mentioned that Bangladesh had already conveyed her support to Vietnam for their Non-Permanent Membership of the UN Security Council (UNSC).
President Iajuddin Ahmed thanked the Vietnamese government for its strong support to Bangladesh's bid for membership of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
He congratulated Vietnam on successfully holding its 12th National Assembly election and said, "the reelection of their state dignitaries reflects the trust placed on the present leadership by the people of Vietnam".
He noted that Bangladesh had achieved 6.50 per cent sustained gross domestic product (GDP) growth over the years. The President remarked that Bangladesh had attained noticeable women empowerment through micro-credit.
In this connection, the President lauded the role of Dr Muhammad Yunus, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, for his outstanding contribution towards micro-credit operations.
He also stressed the need for enhancing educational exchange programme for the benefit of the two countries.
Stating the endowments of agricultural scientists in Bangladesh, the President further urged exchange programme on agriculture.
In reply, the Vietnam envoy said that the relations between Vietnam and Bangladesh were excellent and the ties would be further strengthened in the days to come.
He apprised the President that Vietnam had achieved over 8.0 per cent growth. "Vietnam is an agrarian country and about 80 per cent of its population is involved in this sector," he said.
The ambassador sought cooperation from the President in discharging his duties in Bangladesh.
Earlier, on his arrival at Bangabhaban, the ambassador was given a guard of honour by the President's Guard Regiment.
Among others, Military Secretary to the President Major General Md Aminul Karim, Secretary Md Sirajul Islam and Press Secretary Abdul Awal Howlader and Acting Foreign Secretary MAK Mahmud were present on the occasion.
