NARAYANGANJ, July 12 (BSS): Six-year old sculptures of national and international heroes preserved in the Shatabdi Garden at the Narayanganj Police Line playground have become a centre of attraction for the people and a store house of knowledge for the historians and cultural activists.
There are about thirty five white coloured statues carved on stones and tiles which include national and international heroes like Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Nelson Mandela, General MAG Osmany, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Begum Sufia Kamal, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Begum Rokeya, Mother Teresa, William Shakespeare, Palli Kabi Jasim Uddin, Fakir Lalon Shah and Shilpacharya Joynul Abedin.
The statues are standing on three feet high column on a plot of about two bighas of land adjacent to the playground. However, there is a lack of proper care and maintenance of the sculptures.
A multi-coloured Bangladesh map has been carved on flat tiles where the names of ten sector commanders of the Liberation War have been engraved. The map has been named Amar Sonar Bangla.
The sector commanders are KM Shafiullah, Major Ziaur Rahman, Khaled Musharraf, Major CR Dutta, Mir Shawkat Ali, KM Bashar, Kazi Nuruzzaman, Abu Osman Chowdhury, MA Jalil and M Abu Taher.
The work on the sculptures named was inaugurated by late poet Shamsur Rahaman at the site in 2001. The sculptures were dedicated to the freedom fighters and peace-loving people of the world.
District Police Super Sibgat Ullah told the news agency, the sculptures need renovation and cleaning but there is no fund for the purpose. He said the sculptures are a good example of noble work that a police man can do for the nation. He said there is no sculptures in any police line of 63 other districts of the country.
