NGOs to get BCCRF support for climate change adaptation

Friday, 27 January 2012

The Community Climate Change Project (CCCP), under the umbrella of Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund (BCCRF), will provide grant funding to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to implement community-driven interventions on climate change adaptation, reports UNB.
The Governing Council of BCCRF designated Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) as the implementing agency for funding NGO sub-projects under the proposed CCCP, said a press release on Thursday.
It will channel funds to NGOs working on enhancing the capacity of selected communities to increase their resilience to the impacts of climate change.
The US$ 12.5 million project will focus on the three most vulnerable climate zones in Bangladesh. Of this amount, US$ 10 million will fund projects in saline-affected coastal zones, flood-affected areas and charlands, and drought-hit or rain-scarce areas in northwestern Bangladesh.
The remaining funds will be allocated for monitoring, learning and sub-project refinement, through knowledge sharing and dissemination of lessons learned. The target upazilas will be identified based on the degree of exposure to climate risk, and level of poverty.
Extensive discussions were held between PKSF, the government, development partners, and NGOs and community representatives to determine the detailed project design and implementation arrangements.
Recognising climate change as both an environmental and developmental issue, the government of Bangladesh has renewed commitment to reducing vulnerability from the impacts of climate change and place adaptation as a priority.
To support the implementation of the Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan of government, a multi-donor trust fund BCCRF has been set up to strengthen the country's resilience to climate change.
The BCCRF is designed as a 'one-stop' mechanism for large-scale climate change financing in Bangladesh with two windows: one for funding large-scale public sector projects and the other window for allocating 10 per cent of the funds to NGOs for implementing community projects.
