NHA plans to construct 30,000 flats in six years
FE Report | Monday, 28 July 2008
The government has decided to allot over 5,000 residential flats every year to the people of all walks of life across the country to resolve the chronic accommodation problem, officials said.
Over the next six years the state-owned National Housing Authority (NHA) has planned to construct some 30,000 residential flats under different projects in city corporation areas across the country.
"We are now working hard to give allotments of flats to the people and mitigate the mounting housing crisis especially in the cities," NHA chairman Mohammad Abdul Quayum told the FE.
Some 500 flats would be allotted to the government officials at Lalmatia and Mirpur section two areas soon, he said.
Tender has already been floated to select the developers to construct the flats for the government officials, the NHA chairman said.
The NHA would construct the flats through developers and hand over those to the allotees after collecting down-payment money from them in advance.
Loan facility would also be available for the allotees, sources said.
"We have decided to allot residential flats instead of allotting plots to accommodate maximum people under the housing coverage," Mr Quayum said.
Regarding allotment of the planned 30,000 flats the NHA chairman said the projects already got approval from the monitoring cell of the finance ministry.
Among the planned projects 300 flats having 1500 square feet in sizes would be constructed at Mirpur section two by 2009.
A total of 1020 flats would be constructed at Mohammadpur F block having 1200 square feet in size.
Some 120 flats, having 1300 square feet in sizes would be constructed at Badda in the city by 2009.
Several 12-storied buildings would be constructed at New Colony, E block, Lalmatia and at Asad Avenue of Mohammadpur.
Flat sizes in these buildings would be between 1600 square feet and 4500 square feet.
A total of 22,000 flats would be constructed for low and medium income people at Mirpur section nine having the sizes of 600 square feet, 800 square feet and 1,000 square feet.
Some 10,000 flats would be constructed at Dattapara Housing Estate at Tongi having the sizes of 400, 600, 800 and 1,000 square feet.
Outside Dhaka the NHA has planned to construct flats at Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Sylhet, Bogra, Pabna, Naoga, Rangpur, Magura, Khulna, Potuakhali, Kushtia, Santahar, Noakhali, Natore, Narsingdi, Maulavi Bazar and Comilla.
The NHA has so far established a total of 34 housing estates across the country during its last 50 years of operation since 1958.
