NID server on line again

Separate server for service seekers soon

The country's NID (national identity) server became active on Tuesday, a few days after it went down.
The restoration of the programme has thus been a great comfort to key government agencies in service delivery.
Officials said the server crash has made a wake-up call for the election authorities against virtual oddities.
The Election Commission secretariat is going to create two separate servers-one for the NID wing and another for other related services, they added.
The Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services (IDEA) project takes care of the NID server.
The server crash from Thursday to Monday hit essential services related with immigration and passport, birth certification and accountant general's office.
The government entities were unable to access public records due to the computing glitch.
A technical expert with the project said, "The server problem has been detected and fixed. We're providing uninterrupted service from Tuesday morning."
Local and overseas experts worked on the server and shot the trouble, he told the FE.
A team of 'Oracle Corporation' came to Dhaka to this end, he said.
The NID server has prodigious amounts of information on an estimated 110 million people, including 10.42 million voters, he said.
When asked, the technician said, "The server can handle more than 220 million IDs; there is no problem of overload."
The problem occurred for lack of timely maintenance of some aspects of the server, he cited.
Md Abdul Baten, NID wing director (operations), told the FE that the recent experience caused them set up two separate servers.
The commission secretariat would make a server for the NID and another for service seekers like bank, telecom and the National Board of Revenue, he said.
"The proposal for the servers will be tabled soon," Mr Baten disclosed.
However, many officials of NID wing and divisional passport office said the major problem of the server was solved but it was working a little bit slow.
