Nifty pares gains, RIL, BHEL, Cairn down

MUMBAI, Jan 11 (Economic Times): Benchmarks were witnessing a choppy session with positive bias Monday as investors unwounded long positions ahead of earnings season. Buying activity was seen in broader markets while European markets opened higher.
At 2:30 pm, National Stock Exchange's Nifty was at 5255.60, up 10.85 points or 0.21 per cent. The index touched an intraday high of 5287.20 and low of 5227.80.
Bombay Stock Exchange's Sensex was at 17568.80, up 28.51 points or 0.16 per cent. The 30-share index hit a high of 17776.57 and low of 17557.12
BSE Midcap Index was up 1.06 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index moved 2.03 per cent higher.
Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Realty Index gained 2.93 per cent, BSE Metal Index moved 1.05 per cent higher and BSE Auto Index moved up 0.82 per cent.
Unitech (4.62 per cent), Punjab National Bank (3.30 per cent), DLF (3.17 per cent), ABB (2.83 per cent) and IDEA (2.64 per cent) led the Nifty upmove.
Cairn (-1.76 per cent), BHEL (-1.31 per cent), Reliance Industries (-1.17 per cent), Hindalco (-0.84 per cent) and Power Grid (-0.73 per cent) were amongst the losers.
Shares of Reliance Industries were under selling pressure Monday after the company sold 33 million treasury shares in block deals on the NSE. According to ET Now, the company sold 28.9 million shares at Rs 1089 per share and remaining 4.1 million shares were sold at Rs 1057 per share.
Market breadth was positive on the BSE with 2190 gainers and 733 losers.
European markets opened in the positive terrain led by gains in commodities. FTSE 100 was up 0.97 per cent, CAC 40 gained 1.03 per cent and DAX moved 0.75 per cent higher.
