Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has sent a proposal to the ministry of shipping for introducing 'night navigation' at Paturia- Baghabari river route to facilitate smooth passenger services and transport of goods, officials said.
"We sent a proposal to the ministry to establish night navigation facilities in the route. We are also conducting river dredging for maintaining smooth navigability in different river routes," Md Emdadul Haque, project director, river conservancy and pilotage department of BIWTA told the FE Friday.
He said that the BIWTA would spend Tk 3.0 million to ensure round the clock rive transport (night navigation) service which is expected to start within one month.
During October- April, the navigability of the route faces difficulties due to huge amount of silt that appears during the dry season. Two dredgers have been kept standing by at Paturia-Baghabari route to maintain smooth navigability of the route.
The BIWTA has taken initiatives for dredging 50 kilometres of Paturia- Baghabari river route for night navigation. Initially Tk 100 million has been allocated for the dredging of different river routes.
The smooth river service could be possible round the clock if night navigation facilities are established, the official added.
During the winter season, the day hours are comparatively small than night in the country. Besides, during the season, thick fog and smaller hours of the day usually hamper the journey of river route passengers and movement of goods.
