NILPHAMARI, June 13: The local farmers have urged the government to ensure quick completion of construction of four growers' markets in the district as the work is going on at a snail's pace, sources said.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) undertook the project of constructing four growers' markets in Nilphamari to help the local small farmers increase their income through achieving access to modern market facilities.
"This will greatly contribute to alleviating poverty," a DAE official said, adding that the project was designed to improve the standard of living of the target group. These markets are being built under a 7-year programme titled Northwest Crop Diversification Project (NCDP), scheduled to end by June 2008.
Under the project, a sound marketing system would be built, and the DAE would also collect accurate and timely information on the prices and demands of the products from a number of sources. The collected information, after being compared, would be properly disseminated among the growers for their benefit, the sources also said.
Nilphamari LGED was given the task to construct the markets at Boragari 'hat' in Domar Upazila, Magura 'hat' in Kishoreganj Upazila, Kamar Pukur 'hat' in Saidpur Upazila and Jadur 'hat' in Sadar Upazila. Each market would cost Tk 3.1 million (31 lakh) and would contain various modern facilities.
