NILPHAMARI, Aug 26: Darwani Textile Mill (DTM) of Nilphamari is still being run on service charge contract system or on 'no work no pay' basis, though the owner organisation is making enough profit out of it.
All the DTM employees are assigned to work at the mill on contract basis for 89 days. After the contract is over, one may or may not be employed in his or her work again.
Established in early sixties, DTM was once very reputed for its quality production. In 2002 it was handed over to Trade Concern, a trade body of Narayanganj, on service charge contract system under the condition that the management agreement would be renewed after every two years.
After the handing over of the management, only one-forth of the total employees of the mill was reduced, though all of them accepted self-retirement under the golden handshake system.
Previously there were 1,000 employees worked in DTM. Now there are about 750 employees working in the mill, and most of them are female.
When contacted none in the DTM administration agreed to give any particular about the mill. However, about 25,056 spindles are in operation in the mill, and the volume of its production is very satisfactory, sources said.
