Nine burnt to death in Ctg slum fire

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 17: Nine people were burnt to death and several others injured in a devastating fire at Chaktai under Bakolia Police Station in the city on Sunday.
Fire fighters said the fire broke out at Chaktai Bhera Market area around 3:30 am when the victims were deep asleep in their shanties.
Ten fire fighting units from four fire stations rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after several hours. Six of the victims were from two families, fire service officer Jashim Uddin said.
The deceased were identified as Rahima Aktar (36), her daughter Nazma Aktar (17), Zakir Hossain Babu (8), Nasreen (16), Hasina Aktar (35), Ayesha (37), Sohag (19), and a 10-month-old baby. Identity of another victim could not be known.
Fire Service deputy assistant director Jashim Uddin said they recovered the bodies from the debris around 9:30 am. All were burnt alive while they were asleep, he said, adding that the cause behind the fire could not be known immediately.
Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Md Ilyas Hossain visited the site and formed a committee to investigate the fire incident. He also announced Tk 20,000 for each victim for burial.
The committee was formed with Additional Deputy Commissioner Mashhudul Kabir as its head and Fire Service Officer Ali Akbar as member secretary.
