Wednesday, 12 October 2011
The police have detained nine activists of Jama'at-e-Islami's student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) from Dhaka's Pallabi area when they were holding a meeting on a boat.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Pallabi police KM Shahabuddin told bdnews24.com, "The ICS activists were detained Monday night when they were holding a meeting on a boat near Mirpur embankment."
The OC, however, declined to elaborate on what charges they were detained.
Those detained were Habibur Rahman (26), Ahmed Ismail (24), Shahadat Hossain (25), Abdus Salam (24), Muhibullah (22), Barkat Ullah (24), Abdullah Al-Masud (21), Nurul Islam (21) and Abbas Uddin (26).
The OC added that they had been produced before the court.
Shahabuddin said he would be able to elaborate on whether they were tied to the September 19 clash between Jama'at activists and the police if the court granted remand to question them.
On September 19, activists of Jama'at-e-Islami and its student wing clashed with the police at Dhaka and Chittagong. In addition to attacking police personnel on that day, the activists also vandalised vehicles and property. s
