Tuesday, 25 March 2014

A special tribunal is set to deliver its judgment in war crimes cases filed against Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami any day. The trial of the Jamaat leader for war crimes committed during the country’s independence struggle 43 years ago, ended on Monday afternoon. International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1, headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, will now deliver the verdict over Nizami’s wartime offences any day. On June 29, 2010, Nizami was arrested in front of National Press Club (NPC) in the city after a magistrate court in Dhaka issued a warrant of arrest in connection with a criminal case over hurting religious sentiment of Muslims. The tribunal on May 28, 2012, indicted the Jamaat Ameer for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. Later, responding to a prosecution plea, the tribunal on July 22 showed him arrested in connection with the war crimes case, according to a news agency.
