MANIKGANJ, Jan 26 (BSS): Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader has called upon the party leaders and workers not to recruit dishonest, corrupt people or anti-liberation elements in the party in the name of increasing members.
"Please, do not recruit bad people in party. Identified criminals, extortionists, land grabbers, drug addicts, communal and anti-liberation forces cannot be members of Awami League," he told a council meeting marking member collection campaign on the premises of Manikganj Bijoy Mela ground.
Quader, also minister for road transport and bridges, urged the local party men to conduct the campaign by dividing Manikganj district in three parts.
He also asked them to take the campaign from door to door by listing how many people become members from which families, how many become new members or how many old members renewed their memberships, how many do politics for other parties and how many people are neutral.
The AL general secretary said nomination surveys are being conducted and reports are being submitted to the Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in every three-month.
Quader said on the basis of those surveys, Sheikh Hasina would like to nominate the candidates, who bear the maximum acceptability of the people, to contest in the next parliament election.
Manikganj district AL organised the meeting with its president and Manikganj Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate Golam Mohiuddin in the chair.
Awami League presidium members and former Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun and Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, among others, were present on the occasion.
