The World Youth Skill Day was observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe on Saturday with taking due programmes.
Bangladesh has been observing the day since 2015 after United Nation General Assembly fixed July 15 for its observance in 2014.
Marking the day this year, Skill for Employment Investment Porgramme (SEIP) held a workshop in the city on Saturday where Senior Finance Secretary Fatima Yasmin was present as the chief guest.
Presided over by SEIP (Skill for Employment Investment Porgramme ) Executive Project Director and additional secretary Fatema Rahim Veena, the workshop was also attended by National Skill Development Authority (NSDA) Executive Chairman Nasrin Afroz and Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of National Human Resource Development Fund Mohammad Ekhlasur Rahman as special guests.
The chief guest laid importance on flourishing skills of youths and called upon all to work together in this regard for building a nation of self dignity.
There is no alternative to turning youths into skilled manpower to continue the country's development trend, she said.
The senior finance secretary said the present government has taken various steps with highest priority to turning the youth population into skilled manpower for creating employment opportunities at home and abroad.
Unless their skills are developed, this segment of population will become a burden for the nation, she added.
The NSDA executive chairman also highlighted the activities of the authorities in youth skill development through a structural way so that skill and training can go in a coordinated way.
The CEO of NHRDF highlighted the government's mandate to develop smart Bangladesh and said skilled youth manpower is the main supporting strength to achieve the goal.
The chair of the workshop highlighted the SEIP's activities since its inception in 2014 and said the programme has the target to impart trainings to 841,000 youths on various trades by December this year.
