No amendment to constitution without referendum: BNP******

Sunday, 8 May 2011

BNP has reiterated that the party will not accept the Constitution if it is amended without referendum. BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said this at a discussion on 'Misrule of the present government and violation of human rights' organised by the Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Jote at the DRU in the city Saturday, reports bdnews24.com. Chaired by Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Jote president Hasan Uddin Sarker, the discussion meeting was addressed, among others, by Jatiya Ganatantrik Party president Shafiul Alam Prodhan and BNP's central committee Organising Secretary Moshiur Rahman. "The government has initiated a move to amend the Constitution instead of resolving the basic problems faced by the country," the BNP leader said. Mosharraf alleged that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had brought amendments to the Constitution within 11 minutes in parliament in 1975 and established a one-party rule in the country. "He (Mujib) had tried to be lifelong president ignoring people. But Ziaur Rahman had gone for referendum to bring basic changes in the constitution. Today, Awami League wants to change basic articles without taking people's mandate, which will never be acceptable," he said. The former minister expressed the hope that a good sense would prevail upon the government. "Otherwise, Awami League will have to shoulder the responsibly for its misdeeds."
