No Bangladeshi among those abducted in Iraq

Wednesday, 18 June 2014

No Bangladesh national was abducted from the Tariq Noor Al Huda construction company in the Iraq city of Mosul though Bangladeshi workers used to work in that company, said the Bangladesh Ambassador to Iraq Wednesday.
“No Bangladesh national has been abducted,” Bangladesh envoy Maj Gen Rezanur Rahman Khan told UNB over phone.
He said some 51 Bangladeshi and 40 Indian workers used to work in the company.
The envoy said the Bangladeshi workers are safe and they have been kept in a camp there. “The Embassy is in touch with them.”
Forty Indian construction workers were confirmed to have been abducted from the Iraqi city of Mosul, but no ransom demands were received, reports Hindustan Times quoting Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wednesday.
The abducted people, he said, were largely from northern parts of India — “Punjab belt, etc”. “You can never be certain about exact information,” he said on being asked about the exact location of the workers and their condition.
“India is sending back its former envoy… to strengthen the embassies in Iraq,” he added.
It is estimated that over 14,000 Bangladesh nationals are working in that country, mostly in the construction sector, while a few thousands more Bangladesh nationals are waiting to go to Iraq for jobs.
