No bar to arrest Tangail MP Rana: Attorney General

Wednesday, 10 December 2014

There is no legal bar to arrest Tangail-3 MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana over the murder of local Awami League leader and freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed, says Attorney General Mahbubey Alam. His comments came on Wednesday after the Supreme Court resolved a petition in this regard. On January 18, 2013, Awami League’s Tangail district unit member Faruk Ahmed was shot dead in front of his home at College Para in the district town. His wife filed a case over the killing on Jan 21 with the Tangail police station. On Sept 14, a national daily ran a report claiming that the MP and his brothers were behind the killing. The lawmaker and his three brothers moved the High Court, when it instructed authorities not to arrest or harass them without proper legal procedure. The state appealed against the order at the Supreme Court and the Chamber Judge stayed the order. Later the full bench of the Appellate Division heard the matter. On Wednesday, the bench headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain resolved the matter and upheld the Chamber Judge’s decision to stay the High Court order. The Appellate Division order removes any legal barriers to arrest the Tangail lawmaker and his three brothers, according to bdnews24.com.
