No bar to holding local polls ahead of JS polls: Dr Kamal

Monday, 23 June 2008

Backing the Election Commission (EC) decision on holding local body elections ahead of parliamentary polls, Gono Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain Sunday said there is no bar to such elections under the constitution, reports UNB.

"There is no bar for the Election Commission (EC) to hold the local bodies' elections as per its constitutional powers under articles 119 (1)and (2)," he said in a written statement at a press briefing at his Bailey Road residence in the afternoon.

Dr Kamal said public opinions would be formed against those creating controversy and the EC could hold a free and fair election through establishing national unity.

He said despite untold miseries due to food price-hike, the country's people are waiting to establish a government of national unity with honest and competent persons through holding a fair election free from terrorists, muscle power and black money.

Describing the people's opinion after his recent visit to some areas in northwestern districts including Kansat in Chapainawabganj, the Gono Forum president said they expect an effective parliament in the country through the restoration of full democracy. "The spirit of Kansat incident will inspire us."

He said they are always for a meaningful change, effective parliament and responsible government.

Kamal said unemployment has taken a "dangerous form" and many mills and factories were closed and went out of operation due to acute shortage of electricity in the country. He urged the government to broadcast the voices of the common people including the honest freedom fighters through the state-owned television BTV without giving any priority to the corrupt.
