Bangladesh Railway has cancelled weekly holidays for 37 inter-city trains of its eastern zone from Oct 1 to 5 to tackle the added pressure of passengers during the Eid-ul-Azha and Durga Puja vacations, according to a news agency.
"It'll be possible to transport up to 60,000 passengers during this time," Railways East General Manager Md Mozammel Haq said Friday.
The vacation of all railway officials has also been cancelled.
He said special trains would be introduced and 72 cars added to the trains to transport holidaymakers in the region.
Advanced train tickets for Oct 1 have gone on sale but people are not queuing up in long lines to get them at Chittagong Railway Station.
Station Manager Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad said they planned to sell 3,735 tickets for eight inter-city trains daily.
Two special trains will run on the Chittagong-Chandpur route daily from Oct 3 to 5.
