No Canadian education institution presently operates offshore campus in Bangladesh

Friday, 13 July 2007

The High Commission of Canada in Dhaka has said no Canadian education institution presently operates an offshore campus in Bangladesh, reports UNB.
The High Commission's clarification came in the wake of a recent publication of the University Grants Commi-ssion (UGC) of Bangladesh that listed 56 illegal branches of foreign universities in Bangladesh.
The UGC has included two Canadian education institutions in their list.
A release of the High Commission said: "For international students, Canada offers an educational system of outstanding quality and academic degrees that are internationally recognized."
The High Commission has requested the UGC to take steps to clarify the misconception between institutions represented by local agents and an offshore campus, which actually deliver academic programs.
It said the UGC together with the Ministry of Education should define and implement rules and regulations to operate public or private universities and foreign offshore campuses in Bangladesh.
Furthermore, the release said, an updated list of accredited public universities, private local universities and UGC activities should be available on the UGC web site with contact addresses and frequently asked questions.
This will be helpful for foreign education institutions to learn about the higher education system and the institutions in Bangladesh.
All Canadian institutions operating offshore campuses outside Canada's borders have always done so with the utmost respect for local laws and regulations, the release mentioned.
It said the High Commission wishes to reassure prospective students and their parents, who may be considering study in Canada, that Canada's universities have long had a reputation for providing students with a high-quality education at an affordable price in a clean and safe environment.
