No classes were held at Dhaka University (DU) Tuesday, the first day of a two-day strike, called by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) following Monday's clash. However, all pre-scheduled examinations were held as usual.
The strike was observed peacefully. JCD brought out a procession in the campus in support of the strike. None of the JCD rival group was seen on the campus Tuesday.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), BCL (Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal) and students under the banner of 'Sochetan Chhatra Samaj' also took out separate processions and held rallies against terrorism on the DU campus.
JCD enforced the strike protesting the 'BCL attack' on its President Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and demanded resignation of the DU vice-chancellor (VC) for 'his provocation' to Monday's violence.
Rejecting the JCD strike, BCL leaders at a rally after the anti-terrorism procession at noon denied their involvement in Monday's clashes and vowed to resist the strike enforcers.
DU VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique at a press conference at his office at noon said the strike, due to factional feud in JCD, was very unfortunate and termed the JCD's demand of his resignation as irrational.
The DU Syndicate formed an 8-member investigation committee with DU Pro-VC Prof Harun-or-Rashid as the chief Tuesday evening to identify those who made an arms showdown in public during the clashes between two factions of JCD Monday and submit the report at the earliest.
JCD General Secretary Amirul Islam Alim at a press conference Monday blamed BCL and the university administration for the violence.
Fierce clashes between two factions of JCD over getting posts in the recently-formed JCD central committee left at least 20 people including the JCD president, DU Proctor Saiful Islam and Shahbagh thana Officer-in-Charge Rejaul Karim injured.
Meanwhile. a case was filed against eight top Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders of Dhaka University unit and 200 to 300 unnamed others in connection with Monday's clashes on the campus, police said.
Sub-inspector of Shahbagh police station Nasiruddin lodged the case Tuesday.
The accused include, JCD central committee general secretary Amirul Islam Alim, senior vice-president Shahidul Islam Babul, joint secretaries Amirul Islam Khan and Asaduzzaman Palash, organising secretary Anisur Rahman Khokon, cultural secretary Tariqul Islam Titu, social welfare secretary Mahbubul Alam Azam and Ferdous Ahmed Munna.
