The Bangladesh Jute Mills Association (BJMA) Sunday welcomed the proposed national budget for fiscal 2007-08.
The BJMA president Kamran T Rahman in a press release hailed the finance adviser for proposing export subsidy worth Tk 11 billion and a further 1.0 billion as special allocation for the country's small and medium enterprises.
The association, however, said there is no specific mention for the share of the jute sector in the subsidy.
It urged the government to raise the subsidy at 15 per cent from the existing 7.50 per cent.
The BJMA also appreciated the government for raising the efficiency of the country's premier Chittagong port.
But the BJMA regretted that there was no clear-cut directive for the development of the jute sector although around 35 million people are involved in the sector either directly or indirectly.
