No deficit in foodgrain production: Nahid

SYLHET, June 14: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has said food production has gone up and there has been no deficit in foodgrain production in the country for the last 6 years due to the different effective initiatives taken by the AL-led government.
The poor and marginal farmers are being given special assistance in the form of fertiliser, seed and cash incentives for increasing paddy and other crops' yield, he said and added, we are committed to make the country poverty-free and self reliant by 2021.
Nahid was addressing at the inaugural function of a 3-day fair of fruit plants at Golapganj upazila of Sylhet recently.
Nahid said the government had exported foodgrains this year and it would be on rise in the future. The farmers' risk factors can be met through modernisation of agriculture. The agri scientists, officials and others were now working in on it, he added.
Deputy Director of Agriculture extension, Sylhet Khairul Bashar and others addressed the function while upazila Nirbahi Officer Ashraful Alam Khan chaired.
Earlier, the minister addressed a reception of retired school teachers at the Golapganj upozila parishad auditorium.
He said there is no corruption in the education sector now. We have ensured handing over books to the school children at the beginning of every year even amid a lot of obstacle, the minister said, the government was now trying to resolve the shortage of teachers and constructing new buildings for schools and colleges.
Besides for developing the teachers' skill we have arranged special training for them. It would help building the new generation capable of facing the mew global challenges, he noted.
