No election without Hasina, no dialogue with EC under ban on politics: Zillur

Sunday, 2 September 2007

Acting President of Awami League (AL) Zillur Rahman Saturday reaffirmed his party stance that it would neither participate in the general election nor would hold the party council keeping Sheikh Hasina in jail, reports UNB.
Talking to the reporters at his Gulshan house, he further said, Awami League would not join dialogue with the Election Commission (EC) under ban on indoor politics.
"These are party's decisions. If these need to be amended, party's approval is required," he said.
Zillur described AL presidium member Amir Hossain Amu's remarks about dialogue, election and Hasina's leadership as his "personal opinion".
Earlier, Amu told the reporters that AL might give Sheikh Hasina "greater respect" if she voluntarily relinquished the president post she has served for last 25-26 years.
To underpin his suggestions for the party chief, he cited Congress President Sonia Gandhi of India who refused to assume the office of prime minister after Congress won the last elections.
In reply to a question, Amu, however said, there may be difference of opinions, but there is no rift in Awami League.
To another question, he said, Sheikh Hasina should not be weighed with Khaleda Zia on the same scale, and also demanded trial of corruption, murder and rape that had occurred during the BNP-Jamaat regime.
Asked why he did not meet Sheikh Hasina in jail, Amu said, he sent an application to the authorities for permission, but he may not meet her since he is leaving the country Sunday for Singapore to accompany his ailing wife there.
