No expected rise in labour export in 2014: report

Banglsdesh’s labour migration abroad has increased by only 1 per cent in 2014 from the previous year as the country could not explore new labour markets, says a report. It, however, says the women migration has witnessed a rise by 6pc in the current year. Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) has filed the report titled ‘Pattern and Trends of Labour Migration 2014: Achievements and Challenges’. Dr Tasneem Siddiqi, founding chair of RMMRU, disclosed the details at a press conference in the city. According to the report, some 411,000 Bangladeshis went to different countries as of December 22 against last year’s 409,253. The highest number of 101,882 labours migrated to Oman in 2014 which is 24.85pc of the country’s total manpower export. Qatar holds the 2nd position with 20.66pc while 13.02pc of this year’s migrants went to Singapore. Of the total, 67,583 are skilled and unskilled women who went mostly to Middle Eastern countries, this year which is 17.70pc of total migration. As per statistics of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), 343,845 women workers migrated to different countries from 1991 to 2014, according to a news agency.
