No export, import at Akhaura Land Port

Saturday, 25 July 2015

Export and import came to a halt at Akhaura Land Port in Brahmanbaria district on Saturday morning due to the repair of a bridge in the port area. The port’s Assistant Revenue Officer Md Mizanur Rahman, however, said passenger movement from Bangladesh and India would remain unhampered. He said export and import operations will remain suspended for two days from this (Saturday) morning when repair work of the bailey bridge began. Regular ‘commercial activities’ will resume on Monday, he said.
The land port’s Importers-Exporters’ Association General Secretary Monir Hossain Babul said the decision had been forced by the need to repair the important bridge on the Jaji River close to the land port. The work would last until Sunday afternoon. Bangladesh exported products worth over Tk2.26 billion to India’s north-eastern state of Tripura through the Akhaura port in 2013-2014. The items of export include cement, plastic products, dry fish, glass, agriculture equipment and jute and jute products, according to a news agency.
