No extension of time for Benazir to face quizzing

Says ACC lawyer

FE REPORT | Friday, 21 June 2024

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed will not get time any more from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) if he doesn't appear before it on June 23 to face interrogation over graft allegations and amassing huge properties beyond known sources of income.
ACC rules and regulations do not have jurisdiction to grant for a second time.
In a briefing on Thursday, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said: "If he (Benazir) doesn't appear to face the interrogation, law will take its own course … After completion of the investigation, the commission will decide what to do or not to do."
The ACC on May 28 summoned former IGP Benazir and his family members to quiz over graft allegations and amassing huge properties beyond known sources of income.
The ACC asked the former IGP to appear before it on June 6 and his wife and children on June 9.
However, Benazir and his family members didn't appear before the ACC on the stipulated dates. They sought time to appear before the ACC.
The ACC on June 6 fixed a new date and asked Banazir to appear before it on June 23. On June 9, it also granted 15 days time for Benazir's wife and daughters and asked them to appear before it on June 24.
Earlier on May 23, a Dhaka court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate properties under 83 deeds, which state 114 acres of land, and freeze 33 bank accounts under the name of Benazir and his family members.
Three days later, the same court ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate assets under 119 more deeds of Benazir and his family members in connection with alleged corruption.
It also directed them to confiscate eight wholly-owned and 15 partially-owned properties of Benazir, his wife Jissan Mirza, and three daughters.
The same court on June 12 ordered to confiscate those movable and immovable properties in three districts in connection with corruption allegations against them.
The immovable properties are 24 kathas of land at Rupganj of Narayanganj, three kathas of land at Dhaka's Uttara area, two flats measuring 3075 square foot at Badda, 25 acres of land at Bandarban and six flats at Adabor of Dhaka.
The movable properties are shares in Citizen Television Ltd and Tigerafit Apparels Ltd.
