No floods now, despite rise in water levels of Ganges-Padma, Brahmaputra-Jamuna

Sunday, 13 July 2008

The country was not faced with any flooding in next three days despite rises in the levels of the Ganges-Padma and the Brahmaputra-Jamuna last week, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre(FFWC) officials said, reports BSS.

After some upward movement, during which the Ganges-Padma crossed its danger level (DL), downstream at Bhagyakul Thursday afternoon, the river has fallen below its red mark yesterday morning.

It was flowing two cm below its DL of six metre Saturday as the river became steady upstream, including at Farakka, West Bengal, the FFWC sources said.

Meanwhile, a rising Brahmaputra-Jamuna, also began a slow decline after contributing to the sudden rise in the Ganges-Padma. The Brahmaputra helped the Ganges-Padma to swell at Goalundo, where Brahmaputra joins with it.

Both the rivers are on the retreat now. They will fall slowly but steadily during the next three days, a FFWC official said.

A FFWC river monitoring report said all the country's rivers are flowing below their DL. Out of its 73 river water level monitoring stations 37 marked rise,30 had fallen, seven remained steady.

The rivers in the Brahmaputra, the Ganges and the Meghna basins marked both rise and fall. Most of the rivers in the south eastern hill basin marked rise.

The Teesta at Dalia marked rise by 22cm, flowing below DL despite heavy rains yesterday at Kurigram.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna recorded fall by 22cm at its entry point at Noonkhawa,19cm downstream at Chilmari, 23cm at bahadurabad,10cm at Sirajganj and five cm at Aricha. The Ganges- Padma recorded fall by four cm at its entry point at Pankha, one cm downstream at Hardinge Bridge and two cm at Goalundo while remaining steady at Rajshahi and Bhagyakul.

On the Meghna basin the Surma rose by 63cm at kanaighat, eightcm at Sylhet and 18cm at Sunamganj, the Kushiyara fell by 22cm at Amalshid,14cm at Sheola and fourcm at Sherpur. The Manu also fell by 38cm at Manu Railway Bridge and 17cm at maulvi Bazar. The Kangsha, which went in spate crossing its DL last week have fallen below DL, falling by 13cm at Jariajanjail, Netrokona.

The Meghna remained steady at Bhairab Bazar. At the south eastern hill basin the Muhuri at Parshuram recorded sharp rise by 172cm,the Halda rose by 144cm at narayanhat and 339cm at Panchpukuria, the matamuhuri rose by 43cm at Lama,The FEni at Ramgarh rose by 52cm, the FFWC report added on the river situation.
