No influence in UP polls: EC
Monday, 28 February 2011
Election Commissioner (EC) M Sakhawat Hossain on Sunday said local MPs and candidates would have to shoulder the responsibility for any violence during the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) polls, reports bdnews24.com.
Accusing a section of MPs of trying to influence the polls, Mr Sakhawat said: "Influence in the non-party UP polls would not be allowed."
Mr Sakhawat told the journalists at the Election Commission that nominations of those found to be responsible for violence would not be accepted.
He warned that the candidature might also be cancelled, if needed, if one was found involved in violence.
On Feb 24, the EC declared schedules for the polls to be held from Mar 28 to Apr 3 in around 600 unions.
