No let up in mugging in city

Monday, 22 September 2008

NO matter what the police have come up with so far, there has been no let up in the mugging incidents in the megalopolis that is Dhaka. Many police drives, the numerous check-posts in the city, assistant commissioners leading special teams, the Orange Patrol teams, special teams of women members of the detective branch-nothing seems to work. Everyday, dozens of people are mugged in the capital.
A recently published book by the police commissioner mentions 450 mugging spots. A month ago, the police reportedly went into action. About a hundred check-posts were established all over the city. Vehicles were stopped and searched. Because of the coming Eid, the law enforcers have been going into 'special' operations to curb the menace of mugging. There is also the Orange Team, a hundred of them in the capital according to one report, and these cops travel in motorcycles so that they can move quickly to prevent muggings and apprehend the muggers. Then there is the women DB team who are in civil dress so that they can arrest lawbreakers, specially muggers.
But all these efforts by the law enforcers have not yielded positive results. The mugger seems to be just a step ahead of the cops. The muggers, specially the so-called 'molom party' are becoming more daring day by day. They do not care if the victim sometimes loses his life.
Finally, many people think that the mugging will not lessen let alone stop if the police do not follow their duty properly. There have been many reports that they are not found at many places in the city and these are the places where mugging is rife.
Will the law enforcers please take note that it is not only the posh areas of the city that need their help. Others that are not upper class are also part of the metropolitan area and they too need protection from criminals.
