No modern equipment to douse fire in high-rise buildings in Chandpur

CHANDPUR, May 14: Fire incidents are frequent in Chandpur town. But there are no modern fire equipment and ladders to rescue the trapped people and douse devastating flames on top floors of high-rise buildings in the town.
It was observed that in the last 15 years, many high-rise buildings have been built here ignoring municipal rules. A few high-rise buildings are seen in Hajiganj Upazila Sadar.
Chandpur Municipality's Executive Engineer Md Shamsuddoha said, ''We have no permission to construct buildings above 7-storey in Chandpur town. Yet many have constructed buildings violating this rule. We'll take action in this regard.''
Chandpur Fire Service and Civil Defence Office sources and a fire fighter Mohammad Nasiruddin said, ''We have no modern equipment to rescue the trapped people and douse fires on 8/9/10 storey buildings in Chandpur town.''
According to official sources, a total of 538 fire incidents occurred in the last 16 months in Chandpur Sadar and seven other Upazilas in the district.
