No more stop and search for RAB

Monday, 26 May 2014

The Rapid Action Battalion will no longer set up checkpoints on the streets to carry out stop and search to put more focus on its primary objectives, the elite police unit says.
A spokesperson for RAB told bdnews24.com that they will not perform ‘additional tasks’ from now on.
“The RAB director general called each battalion several days ago and told them that they won’t have to perform additional duties,” media wing director Habibur Rahman said.
At its inception, it was tasked with seven jobs.
These were-- ensuring internal security, arresting armed militants and terrorists, recovering illegal arms and ammunition, assisting other law-enforcing agencies, gathering intelligence, investigating any crime and performing any duty as per government orders.
“RAB members used to perform some additional tasks apart from these primary tasks,” Rahman said.
RAB will also not control traffic, guard tender boxes, and intervene in issues relating to land, money and family matters.
The crime-busting unit has been widely criticised for violating human rights and extrajudicial killings in ‘crossfires’.
