FE Report
The government has no plan to give gas connections for domestic purposes before exploring new gas fields in the country, power and energy adviser to Prime Minister Towfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said.
He said: "We will give priority to the power, industries and fertiliser sector in providing gas connections and after that we will think about gas connection for domestic use."
He was speaking to reporters after the inaugural ceremony of prepaid gas metre of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL) at Mohammadpur and Lalmatia under a pilot project in the city Tuesday.
TGTDCL has installed 4500 prepaid metres for residential use and a gas user can recharge his her smart card on payment of Tk 200 to Tk 1350 from adjacent Pubali and UCBL bank branches. A consumer has to pay Tk 50 monthly as metre charge.
He said the economic use of gas metre will create an opportunity for others who do not have gas connections and gradually we will introduce prepaid metres for electricity and water to reduce the misuse.
He said there is a big gap in demand and supply of gas. In this situation we are hopeful of extracting 800-1000 MMC gas in next two years.
Petrobangla chairman M Hossain Monsur who presided over the function said: "We will be ready to provide gas connection to Rajshahi but the government is yet to finalise a policy for giving gas in industries and residences in Rajshahi."
Prepaid gas metre could be a good option if the government decides to give gas connection in Rajshah, he added.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources M Enamul Haq, state minister for Local Government, rural development and cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak, energy, power and mineral resources secretary Mohammad Mejbahuddin, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET ) vice chancellor Nazrul Islam and TGTDCL managing director Md.Abdul Aziz Khan also spoke in the inaugural ceremony.
