JHENAIDAH, July 10 (BSS): Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said no party syndicate will be allowed to influence government offices or development projects, stressing that no BNP leader or activist will receive undue favours at the cost of the government's reputation.
Speaking as the chief guest at a meeting of the Hospital Management Committee at Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex in Jhenaidah on Friday, the minister said although the BNP is in power, its leaders and activists would not be granted benefits that could bring the government into disrepute.
He warned that extortion and the misuse of political influence would not be tolerated, saying such acts might benefit individuals but would damage the government's image.
Referring to a recent incident in Barishal, Asaduzzaman said a man had allegedly forced officials to sign a cheque by invoking his party affiliation. "We did not let the matter pass. He has been brought under the law," he said.
The minister added that anyone who commits a crime would be treated as a criminal, regardless of their position or affiliation within the party.
He also warned against attempts to exploit the political change for personal gain. "If anyone thinks that the Awami League engaged in looting and they can simply replace its vacant place, they are living in a fool's paradise," he said.
Urging party leaders and activists not to harbour such misconceptions, the minister reiterated that the government would not extend any benefit that could damage either the government's or the party's image.
"No activity by any party leader or activist that brings disrepute to the party will be tolerated," he added.
Highlighting plans to improve healthcare services, the minister said the 50-bed Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex would be expanded.
"We are trying to increase the number of beds. Besides, we are taking several initiatives to ensure improved healthcare services at the hospital. We are committed to ensuring better healthcare for the people of this area," he said.
Deputy Commissioner Md. Noman Hossain, Superintendent of Police Mia Mohammad Ashish Bin Hasan, Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Shailkupa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Mahfuzur Rahman and Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Md. Rashed Al Mamun, among others, attended the meeting.
Officials and employees of the upazila health department, leaders and activists of the local BNP and its associate bodies, and representatives of various social and civil society organisations were also present.
