No polls under AL: Fakhrul

Protest rally held at Nayapaltan

FE REPORT | Saturday, 5 August 2023

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir vowed on Friday not to allow (holding) any election under the ruling Awami League (AL).
Alleging the government of holding power by force, he challenged the AL to leave power and come to the field, if they (the government) want to play with the opponent.
"It is great to get power without election, isn't it? You (the government) said a lot about playing with the opposition... If so, quit power and come to the field for play (with the opposition)."
He said these during a rally, organised in protest against the verdict given by a court against BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman and his wife Zubaida Rahman in a graft case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission.
BNP Dhaka district and Dhaka city north and Dhaka city south units organised the protest rally in front of the party's central office in the capital's Naya Paltan area.
Defying rains, BNP leaders and activists from different parts of the capital along with the adjoining upazilas thronged the rally.
"It is not only BNP's crisis to oust the Awami League. It is the crisis of the nation. We must defeat the government through strong movement," Mirza Fakhrul also said.
"We (BNP) don't care about what the USA and India think. We hear what people say. Awami League will not be allowed to come to power again. This time we will not allow any election under the ruling AL government."
"The government must go. It cannot suppress our movement by attacking us. Fall of the government will be ensured through strong movement."
He stated that Tarique Rahman is a name of reliance among the democratic minded people.
Mr Fakhrul also criticised the government for failing to control dengue.
Convener of Dhaka city north BNP Aman Ullah Aman presided over the rally, which was also addressed by party's standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Dr Abdul Moin Khan.
