CHATTOGRAM, Sept 21: Potato rose in price in the port city of Chattogram on Thursday as the supply to the wholesale market remains stopped in the current week.
Rashid Ahmed, president of Riazuddinbazar Aratdar Welfare Association, said traders stopped the supply of potato from last Sunday.
As a result, an artificial crisis is prevailing in Chattogram kitchen markets, he added.
Meanwhile, Faruk Shibli, general secretary of the association, said the price has shot up as stockists have hoarded potato in cold storages instead of supply.
"Aratdars (wholesalers) are not involved in stockpiling essentials. Yet, the mobile court raids wholesale markets only to create dissatisfaction among traders. But no cold storage in Munshiganj or anywhere in the country has been raided yet."
On the other hand, the prices of egg, potato and onion are still high as retailers are violating the government's directives here.
They are overcharging customers against these three commodities ignoring the prices fixed by the government recently.
Sources said government directed to sale the egg at the price of taka 12 per piece. But, in the markets of Chattogram, the traders are selling egg at the price of taka 1 per piece today (Thursday).
In Chattogram city markets, the traders were selling potato at Tk 50 per kg on Thursday.
On the other hand, they retained onion at Tk 80-82 per kg.
